The food and beverage industry is one of the largest growing segments of automation, and represents an interesting set of challenges.

  • There are a wide variety of items that come in diverse shapes, sizes, weights and density. Every croissant may look the same, but will all be slightly different, for example.
  • Regulatory issues are of the utmost importance. Automation components must meet government safety and sanitation standards for coming in contact with food.
  • Many food items are packaged under extreme refrigerated or freezer environments (think frozen chicken).
  • Finally, you need to ensure that delicate food items aren’t damaged.

Soft Robotics has tackled all of these challenges. Fully sealed and validated for ingress protection, the Soft Robotics grippers conform to the objects being picked - just like the human hand. Primary and secondary food packaging can be automated, at high speeds, all while ensuring even the most delicate of food items are safe from damage and bruising. The Soft Robotics system can easily adapt to product variation, enabling an easier navigation of SKU proliferation challenges. The system uses material science to adapt to product variation in size, shape and weight, eliminating the need to train the robot gripper on each discrete product.

With Soft Robotics' unique and innovative approach, food and beverage manufacturers, packaging companies and 3PLs have been able to conquer the two main challenges their industry faces: labor shortages and improving throughput in high speed pick and place applications.

We are proud to be one of the featured companies on this year’s 2019 FL100+ Top Software and Technology Providers list.
